I opened this room because I could not find one where it was acceptable to be a beginner at forty.
Pema came to yoga at thirty-one, in a commercial studio in Lalitpur where she was, by a decade, the oldest person in the room and the only one who could not touch her toes. She stayed anyway, trained in Rishikesh three years later, and spent six years teaching classes of forty people whose names she never learned.
MAUNA opened in 2021 with two rooms, eleven mats and a policy that no class would ever be bigger than the teacher could remember. She writes the sequences the whole studio works from, teaches most weekday mornings, and still describes herself as a slow student.
She is the person to talk to about starting from nothing, about coming back after a long gap, and about whether a practice is worth keeping when you have stopped enjoying it.
Qualifications shown are illustrative sample data for this template. A live studio should publish only what it can evidence.
