Vinyasa

Movement joined to breath.

A class holding triangle pose in a row beside tall windows

A continuous, moderately paced sequence where each movement is matched to an inhale or an exhale. It is the most physical thing we teach and it is still not a workout — nobody counts reps, and there is no back of the class.

Expect to be warm and slightly out of breath about twenty minutes in, and to spend the last ten minutes entirely still.

What actually happens

An hour of vinyasa, in order.

  1. First ten minutes

On your back or seated while the teacher works out who is in the room and what everyone’s shoulders are doing today.

  2. Twenty minutes in

Standing sequences, repeated twice so the second time makes sense. This is the warmest part.

  3. The last third

Floor work, hips and a long twist. The pace drops without announcing itself.

  4. The last ten minutes

Savasana. Nobody leaves early; it is part of the class, not the queue for the door.

When this is the wrong class. If you have an acute shoulder or wrist injury, this is the wrong class this month — come to Restorative or Yin instead and tell the teacher why. We would rather see you in the right room than lose you to a flare-up.

Questions about vinyasa

Then you will do something else while everyone is doing one, and the teacher will show you what. About a third of any given class is doing a variation.

No. The room is whatever Boudha is that day, plus twenty people. We do not heat it.

Fit enough to get up and down from the floor several times without dread. That is the whole requirement.
