Langtang & Tamang country

The closest big mountains to Kathmandu, and a valley rebuilt by hand.

Langtang lost its main village and much of its population to a landslide in 2015. What has happened since is the reason we keep bringing people back: the valley has been rebuilt, lodge by lodge, largely by the families who lost everything, and tourism income is the mechanism doing it.

It is also, straightforwardly, a beautiful and underrated walk — seven hours by road from Kathmandu and then a forest gorge that opens into a glaciated basin with a 7,227 m peak at the head of it.
