Dawa was working in Kathmandu when the 2015 earthquake took the valley he grew up in. He went home, and the Tamang Heritage Trail as it exists today is largely the result of what he and a handful of others did over the following four years.
The homestays on that route are not franchised. Each one is a household that Dawa trained in food safety, bedding standards and pricing, and each one is paid directly by Aroha at the end of the trip rather than through an intermediary.
He is also the calmest person on any trail. Ask him about the valley and he will tell you the whole story, including the difficult parts.
Every bed you sleep in on this trail belongs to the family that made it. That is the entire design.
