Tamang Heritage Trail

A week of homestays through Tamang villages in Rasuwa, on a trail the households themselves built back after 2015.
The Tamang Heritage Trail was designed as a community tourism project, and unusually it worked. Twenty-three households across five villages run the homestays, were trained locally, and are paid directly rather than through an agency.
The altitude is modest and the walking is easy, so this is not a trek people book for the challenge. They book it for hot springs at Tatopani, Tibetan-border views from Nagthali, and dinners in kitchens where everyone eats together.
- Five nights in trained family homestays, paid directly
- Natural hot springs at Tatopani after the third day
- Nagthali ridge, looking across at Langtang Lirung and Ganesh Himal
- Tamang shamanic dance at Gatlang, when the calendar allows

★★★★★
The kitchens
Five evenings sitting on the floor of a kitchen with a family, eating what they eat. That is the trip. The walking is almost incidental.
-
★★★★★
Easy and meaningful
Chose it as a gentle first trek and got the most memorable week of a month in Nepal. Dawa knows every household by name.
-
★★★★★
Hot springs after day three
Nagthali ridge in clear weather is extraordinary. Note that homestay toilets are basic — worth knowing in advance.
Things to know
How much of what I pay reaches the villages?
About 62% of the trip fee stays in Rasuwa — homestay payments, guide and porter wages, local transport and food bought in the villages. We publish the split at the briefing.
What is a homestay actually like?
A room in a family house with a bed and blankets, a shared washing area, usually a squat toilet, and dinner with the household around the kitchen fire. Simple and warm.
Can this be combined with Langtang valley?
Yes, and it is the combination we recommend most. Twelve days total: the heritage trail first, then up the valley to Kyanjin Gompa.
Do I need to speak any Nepali?
No. Your guide interprets, and most hosts have enough English for the essentials. Learning namaste and dhanyabad goes a long way regardless.
Not quite right?
We will build it around you.
