Eleven days north of the Annapurnas into the old kingdom of Lo — walled cities, cliff monasteries and a landscape with no green in it.
Upper Mustang was closed to outsiders until 1992 and still requires a restricted-area permit at USD 500 for ten days. What that buys is a Tibetan Buddhist culture that survived intact on the Nepali side of the border while it was being dismantled on the other.
The walking is gentle by Himalayan standards. What is demanding is the wind, the sun and the dust. Days are short and afternoons are spent in villages — which is the entire point of this itinerary rather than a compromise in it.

Things to know
Why is the permit so expensive?
USD 500 per person for ten days, set by the Nepali government, of which a share returns to Mustang. It is the mechanism that has kept visitor numbers low enough for the culture to stay intact.
Can I do this in the monsoon?
Yes — Mustang is in the rain shadow and June to August is one of the best times to go. The Jomsom flights are more likely to be disrupted, so we build in flexibility.
How does the wind actually affect the day?
It gets up around 11 am in the Kali Gandaki and blows hard until late afternoon, every day. That is why walking days start at seven and finish early.
What are the homestays like?
A room in a family house, shared washing facilities, and dinner with the household. Three of the eight nights. They are the nights people remember.
