Kathmandu after dark: a food walk
- 4 hoursDuration

Six stops through the old city between dusk and closing time, eating the things Kathmandu actually eats.
This is the trip travellers book on their first night and then recommend to everyone they meet. Four hours on foot from Thamel into the old bazaar quarters, eating at six places that mostly do not have English menus.
It is also the fastest orientation to the city you can buy. By the end you will know how the courtyards work, why the Newar and Tibetan kitchens are different, where to buy spices, and how to get home from Ason without a map.
- Newar sekuwa and bara at a stall that has run since the 1970s
- Jhol momo in broth, at the place that does it properly
- Ason Bazaar at full volume, six streets meeting at one junction
- Juju dhau — the king of yoghurts — set in clay

Book this for your first night
We arrived at 2 pm and did this at 5. By 9 pm we understood the city well enough to explore on our own for a week.

Jhol momo
I have thought about the jhol momo at least once a week since.

Vegetarian and not an afterthought
Anisha had swapped every stop before we arrived. Best food of the whole trip and none of it involved meat.
Things to know
Can this work for vegetarians?
Yes, and it is genuinely good rather than a set of substitutions. Newar cuisine has enormous vegetarian range. Tell us when you book and every stop is adjusted.
Is the street food safe?
Every stop is a place our guides eat themselves, chosen for turnover as much as flavour — high turnover means fresh. In eleven years we have not had a reported illness.
Does it run in the monsoon?
Yes. Five of the six stops are covered, and we hand out umbrellas. July evenings in Kathmandu are actually pleasant.
Is it suitable for children?
From about eight upwards. It is a late finish and a lot of walking, but the food is not aggressively spicy and we can pace it.
Not quite right?
We will build it around you.
