Hygiene & Prevention
The cleanest start to every visit.
About this service
Prevention is the most effective dentistry there is. Our hygienists provide thorough professional cleans, personalised oral hygiene coaching, and gum health management — working with you to keep small issues from becoming large ones.
What to expect
A typical appointment, step by step.
A detailed assessment of your gum health, charting any areas of concern.
A professional clean using hand instruments and, where appropriate, an ultrasonic scaler.
Stain removal and a gentle polish for a smooth, clean finish.
Personalised brushing, flossing, and interdental-cleaning advice tailored to your mouth.
A referral to the dentist if anything requires further attention.
Common questions
Gum disease ranges from mild gingivitis (red, swollen, bleeding gums) to more advanced periodontitis (bone loss around teeth). Warning signs include bleeding when you brush, bad breath, and gums that look like they're receding. A hygiene appointment will assess your gum health fully.
They complement each other but are distinct. A check-up (with the dentist) assesses the health of your teeth, bite, and soft tissues. A hygiene appointment (with the hygienist) focuses on cleaning and gum health. We recommend doing both on the same visit if possible.
Some sensitivity to hot and cold for a day or two after a professional clean is normal, particularly if tartar has built up over a while. We recommend avoiding very hot or cold foods and drinks for 24 hours. If sensitivity persists, let us know — there are treatments that help.
