Chinese Evergreen

Aglaonema commutatum

$154-inch

Gorgeous variegated foliage in green and silver — one of the most adaptable houseplants in existence.

Chinese Evergreen is a staple of interior plant design for good reason: it offers striking, patterned foliage in combinations of deep green, silver, and cream on arching, tropical leaves, while being one of the most forgiving houseplants available. Native to the tropical forests of Asia, Aglaonemas have been cultivated in Chinese temples and homes for centuries, which explains the common name. The species commutatum features silver-grey brushstroke markings on rich green that catch light beautifully. It adapts to low-light conditions where most variegated plants lose their markings, making it one of the few decorative foliage plants suitable for truly dim interiors.

Care guide

Care tips

Water when the top inch or two of soil has dried — every 1–2 weeks in summer, less in winter. Chinese Evergreen prefers warm temperatures (above 15C) and dislikes cold draughts or air-conditioning directly blowing on it. Feed monthly in spring and summer with a balanced liquid fertiliser. Clean the patterned leaves occasionally to maximise light absorption. Repot every 2 years into a slightly larger container with a peat-free potting mix.

Common issues

Yellowing lower leaves are normal ageing; widespread yellowing indicates overwatering or cold exposure. Brown leaf tips typically result from low humidity, fluoride in water, or cold draughts — use filtered water and keep away from windows in winter. Crispy brown patches may indicate direct sun scorch; Chinese Evergreen should not receive direct sunlight. Pests such as mealybugs and scale can occur — check leaf undersides regularly.
