ZZ Plant

Zamioculcas zamiifolia

$164-inch

Glossy, architectural perfection that thrives in conditions most plants cannot survive.

The ZZ Plant is the ultimate low-maintenance houseplant for modern interiors. Its arching stems carry rows of small, waxy, deep-green leaflets that have a polished, architectural quality reminiscent of a living sculpture. Native to the grasslands and forests of eastern Africa, the ZZ stores water in its underground rhizomes — fleshy, potato-like structures — that allow it to survive extended drought. It tolerates deep shade, infrequent watering, and the kind of neglect that would kill most houseplants. A ZZ Plant in a minimal white or terracotta pot is a complete design statement.

Care guide

Care tips

Water sparingly — allow the soil to dry completely between waterings, and in winter reduce watering to once a month or less. ZZ is much more likely to die from overwatering than drought. Use a well-draining potting mix with added perlite. Dust the leaflets occasionally to maintain the natural sheen. Propagation by leaf cuttings in water is slow but very satisfying — allow 6–9 months for rhizomes to form.

Common issues

Yellowing stems and soft, mushy rhizomes indicate root rot from overwatering — the only serious threat to a ZZ. Brown leaf tips usually mean low humidity or salt accumulation; flush soil periodically. Slow growth is normal — ZZ naturally grows slowly and this should not be a cause for concern. The plant is toxic if ingested, so keep away from pets and children.
