Spider Plant
Chlorophytum comosum
Cheerful, striped, and endlessly generous — it grows babies that cascade on long arching stems.
The Spider Plant is one of the most beloved and widely grown houseplants in the world, and for good reason. Its long, arching leaves — striped in cream and green — grow in a dense rosette, then produce long runners tipped with perfectly formed miniature plants (called spiderettes or plantlets) that dangle on arching stems like tiny spiders on their threads. Native to tropical and southern Africa, it is completely pet-safe, extremely easy to grow, and effectively air-purifying. It thrives in a wide range of conditions, propagates in water within days, and produces a cheerful abundance of plantlets to share with friends.

Care tips
Water regularly during the growing season, allowing the top inch of soil to dry between waterings. Spider Plants are prone to fluoride sensitivity — use filtered or rainwater and avoid fluoride-treated tap water. Feed monthly in spring and summer. Allow plantlets to develop on their runners; once they have small roots of their own, they can be snipped off and placed in water or soil to root. Brown tips are extremely common and usually cosmetic.
Common issues
Brown tips are the most common complaint and are usually caused by fluoride or chlorine in tap water, low humidity, or dry soil. Switch to filtered water and trim brown tips with clean scissors at a slight angle. Yellowing leaves can indicate overwatering or poor drainage. Root-bound plants produce more plantlets — Spider Plants actually like being slightly pot-bound. Pale, washed-out leaves indicate too much direct sun.
