Rubber Plant

Ficus elastica 'Burgundy'

$184-inch

Deep burgundy-black foliage with a lacquered sheen — dramatic, structural, and surprisingly tough.

The Burgundy Rubber Plant is one of the most striking foliage plants available for indoor cultivation. Its large, oval leaves emerge in a vivid red before deepening to an almost black burgundy with a high-gloss finish, creating a moody, dramatic contrast against light walls and natural textures. Native to the rainforests of India and Malaysia, Ficus elastica is substantially tougher than its more famous cousin the Fiddle Leaf Fig — it tolerates lower light, less-than-perfect watering, and adapts to new environments without the same theatrics. The sap is milky-white and is the source of natural rubber.

Care tips

Water when the top half of the soil has dried out — insert a finger 5 cm deep and water only if it feels dry. Clean the large leaves monthly with a damp cloth or neem oil solution to maintain the natural gloss. Bright, indirect light will maintain the deepest burgundy leaf colour; too little light causes leaves to fade to green. Wearing gloves when pruning is advisable as the milky sap can irritate skin.

Common issues

Yellowing and dropping leaves are the most common issues, typically caused by overwatering, cold draughts, or sudden relocation. Leaf colour fading to green indicates insufficient light — move closer to a window. Brown edges suggest very low humidity or fluoride sensitivity. Small brown spots may indicate a fungal issue from overly wet conditions.
