This is a front-end template, so playback is simulated — the progress bar and times run on a clock, not a master recording. The one exception is Signal Fires, which plays a short, fully synthesised WebAudio phrase that drives the visualizer live. No external audio is ever loaded.

Liner notes

Signal Fires was written across eighteen months between a coastal studio and a borrowed apartment in the city, mostly at night. It began as a question — what do we still send to one another when the words run out — and became a record about distance, and the small lights we keep burning so someone far away knows we are still here.

Almost every sound on the album started as a voice. Choirs were re-pitched into pads; a single breath became the bass on “Lighthouse.” We wanted the electronics to feel like they had a pulse, like there was a person inside the machine, so we built the low end out of heartbeats and let the synths breathe rather than lock to a grid.

It is, finally, a hopeful record. The fires in the title are warnings and they are also welcomes. We made it to be heard loud, in the dark, with someone.

Selected lyrics

Excerpts from a few tracks — illustrative writing for the template.

  • Light a line of fires down the coast,

so the dark has somewhere it can't go —

if you can see them, then you'll know

I'm still here, I'm still here, I'm still here.
