World regions

Where ODYSSEY travels

Six regions. Each chosen because the travel experience is irreplaceable — not because it's convenient to visit. We go where the journey is worth making.

East Africa

The continent's great stage: wildlife, Rift Valley, and ancient culture.

East Africa is the crucible of human evolution and the stage for the planet's greatest wildlife spectacle. The Rift Valley fractures the continent from the Afar Triangle to Mozambique, leaving behind a chain of soda lakes, volcanic craters, and savanna plains that host more large mammals than anywhere else on Earth. We travel here for the Great Migration, for the mountain gorillas of Volcanoes National Park, and for the quietly extraordinary culture of the Maasai and Swahili coast towns.

South Asia

Himalayan kingdoms, ancient temples, and cultures that measure happiness differently.

South Asia's mountain kingdoms operate on a different calculus: Bhutan measures Gross National Happiness; Nepal guards the world's highest peaks as sacred; Sri Lanka has been civilised longer than most countries have existed. We travel these places with historian-guides who can read a temple inscription and know a spice by touch. The Himalayas are the backdrop, but the foreground is always human: a monk's morning chant, a grandmother's cooking fire, a dzong silhouetted against a glaciated peak.

Central Asia

The Silk Road is not a metaphor here — it is the road.

The Silk Road conjures images of merchants and camels, but in Uzbekistan the physical evidence is overwhelming: the Registan of Samarkand, the mud-brick labyrinth of Khiva, the holy city of Bukhara. Beyond the cities, Kyrgyzstan's Tian Shan mountains shelter eagle hunters and yurt-dwelling nomads. Tajikistan's Pamir Highway is one of the world's highest and most dramatic road journeys. Central Asia remains genuinely off the tourist trail, and genuinely extraordinary.

Southeast Asia

River civilisations, Buddhist temples, and kitchens that changed food for ever.

The Mekong is Southeast Asia's thread: a river that rises in Tibet and feeds Cambodia, Laos, Thailand, and Vietnam — six countries, one current, a thousand dishes. We travel slowly here, by slow boat and on foot, because the kitchens and the temples deserve time. Angkor Wat at dawn before the tour buses. Luang Prabang's tak bat by silent observation. A family pho shop in Hanoi's Old Quarter at 6am, the only customers.

The Arctic

Polar bears, ice that has never known summer, and the silence at the top of the world.

The Arctic is the planet's great emptiness — and in that emptiness is an ecology of extraordinary richness. Svalbard at 78° North hosts polar bears, walrus, Arctic fox, and seabird colonies of a million birds. Greenland's fjords are geological history books, the ice sheet 3 kilometres thick in places. Iceland's midnight sun and active volcanoes offer a different flavour of high-latitude drama. These are expedition destinations — we travel by ice-capable ship with scientists and go where conditions allow.

The Mediterranean

Civilisation's cradle, served with olive oil and the smell of the sea.

The Mediterranean is where Western civilisation was invented — and where it goes to remember itself. The Amalfi Coast, the Greek islands, Dubrovnik's ancient walls, Lisbon's fado-haunted miradouros. We travel these places in the shoulder seasons — May, October — when the light is extraordinary and the restaurants still have tables. A family cooking class in Positano. Sailing between Croatian islands with a skipper who knows where the fish are. An evening at a Lisbon tasca where the fado singer is the daughter of the woman who sang last week.
