Bloom Wellness Spa
2023 · 2,200 m² · Completed
The brief
A day spa and wellness centre occupying the lower floors of a Georgian terrace in Bath. The project navigated the delicate challenge of inserting a contemporary programme into a Grade I listed building, requiring close collaboration with Historic England and Bath & North East Somerset planning authority.
The main thermal bathing pools are housed in a new underground extension beneath the rear garden, accessible via a dramatic stone staircase that descends through the original building. Here, away from the listed fabric, we had freedom to work with raw concrete, black granite, and indirect lighting to create spaces of intense materiality and calm.
The upper floors of the Georgian building are restored to their original proportions and used for treatment rooms and a roof terrace. All conservation work uses traditional lime mortar and handmade brick. The juxtaposition of old and new is made explicit — there is no attempt to blend or pastiche.
