Getting started
- Is LANTERN right for me?
- LANTERN is designed for adults seeking support for anxiety, depression, stress, grief, relationship difficulties, trauma, and many other challenges. It's well-suited if you're comfortable with video or messaging, have a smartphone or computer, and are looking for ongoing therapeutic support rather than crisis intervention.
- How does matching work?
- You complete a short intake (about 5 minutes) describing what's on your mind, your preferred format, language, and availability. Our clinical team reviews this and suggests 2–3 therapists who are well-matched. You choose. If it's not the right fit, you can change at any time.
- How soon can I start?
- Most members are matched within a few hours and have their first session within 48 hours. Availability varies by therapist, time of year, and your preferences.
The therapy
- Is online therapy as effective as in-person therapy?
- The research is encouraging: multiple meta-analyses have found telehealth therapy to be comparably effective to in-person therapy for anxiety, depression, and many other conditions. That said, therapy is deeply personal. Some people genuinely prefer the warmth of being in a room with someone — and that's a valid choice.
- What if I don't connect with my therapist?
- Switch anytime, as many times as you need. A good therapeutic relationship is fundamental to good outcomes, and we take that seriously. Contact our support team and we'll facilitate a smooth transition.
- Can I get a diagnosis through LANTERN?
- LANTERN therapists can provide clinical assessments and observations that inform your care. However, formal psychiatric diagnosis and medication management require a psychiatrist or medical doctor — services not currently available through LANTERN. We're happy to provide documentation to support a referral.
- Is LANTERN suitable for crisis situations?
- No. LANTERN is not a crisis service. If you are in immediate danger, please call 988 (Suicide & Crisis Lifeline), text HOME to 741741 (Crisis Text Line), or go to your nearest emergency room.
Privacy & security
- Is my data private?
- Yes. All session data, messages, and personal information are handled in accordance with HIPAA regulations. Your data is never sold or shared with advertisers. Video sessions are encrypted. You can request deletion of your data at any time.
- Will my employer or insurance company know I'm using LANTERN?
- Not unless you tell them. If you use your employer's EAP or insurance benefits, your plan may receive minimal claims information. Self-pay members receive complete privacy from their insurer.
Pricing & billing
- How much does LANTERN cost?
- Plans start at $60/week for messaging therapy, $90/week for video + messaging, and $120/week for couples. All prices are billed weekly and can be cancelled at any time.
- Does insurance cover LANTERN?
- Many insurance plans cover telehealth. We provide monthly itemized superbills so you can submit for reimbursement. We also accept HSA and FSA cards directly.
- Is financial assistance available?
- Yes. We maintain a limited financial assistance program on a case-by-case basis. Contact our support team to discuss your situation — we'll do our best to help.
